Recreating the Iconic Look of Dune in DaVinci Resolve using Free LUT

Experience the mesmerizing visuals of Dune in your own projects! Dive into the art of color grading with Juan LUT designed to recreate the iconic look of Denis Villeneuve's masterpiece.

In the world of filmmaking, color grading plays a pivotal role in setting the tone, mood, and atmosphere of a movie. One recent cinematic masterpiece that captivated audiences with its visually stunning aesthetic is Dune. The film’s unique blend of warm tones, deep contrasts, and cinematic textures has left an indelible mark on viewers.

In this tutorial, we’ll delve into the art of color grading using DaVinci Resolve to recreate the mesmerizing look of Dune. By understanding the techniques employed in adapting color grading to different environments within DaVinci Resolve, you’ll be equipped to elevate your own projects to cinematic heights.

Getting Started

To begin our journey into the world of color grading within DaVinci Resolve, we first need to understand what sets the Dune color grade apart. Characterized by its warm tones, deep contrasts, and immersive visual experience, Dune’s aesthetic serves as our inspiration for this tutorial.

We start by analyzing two footage clips: an indoor shot and an outdoor shot. Despite their differences in setting, our goal within DaVinci Resolve is to achieve consistency in the overall look, mirroring the cinematic brilliance of Dune.

Outdoor Shot

Our first task is to address the outdoor shot, where we notice imbalances in color temperature and tint. By applying our custom Dune-inspired LUT, named ‘Juan,’ within DaVinci Resolve, we lay the foundation for our color grading process. ‘Juan’ encapsulates the unique color palette and mood of Dune, instantly transporting our footage into its visual universe.

We then proceed to balance the footage within DaVinci Resolve by adjusting the offset wheel to correct the excessive green tint. By fine-tuning the hues of yellow and red within DaVinci Resolve, we bring the sand and landscape closer to the reference shot. Additionally, we decrease the saturation of cyan within DaVinci Resolve to refine the color of the sky, ensuring a cohesive and professional result.

Indoor Shot

Turning our attention to the indoor shot within DaVinci Resolve, we observe challenges with skin tones and background color balance. While applying the ‘Juan’ LUT helps us approach the desired color space within DaVinci Resolve, further refinements are necessary.

We begin by adjusting contrast and saturation within DaVinci Resolve, targeting specific color channels to achieve a balanced look. By tweaking the midtones and addressing oversaturation in the red and yellow channels within DaVinci Resolve, we gradually refine the footage to match the reference shot. Enhancements to highlights and shadows within DaVinci Resolve add depth and dimension to the final result.

Secret Sauce used by Pro-colorists in the industry

LUTs limit your creativity. While LUTs are great, but they limit your creative potential as they can’t determine the camera profile & lighting conditions of your shot, so they work on the basis of incomplete information. Use what the professionals are using in the industry to simplify & achieve desired color grades.

CinegradeX PowerGrade gives your footage the look of a film print, with accurate colors and rich blacks. It gives DaVinci Resolve users the ability to emulate film stock without having to go through the costly and time-consuming process of printing to film.
